Easy, Delish Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe
Updated: Sep 3
After trying this recipe, you will never drink instant hot cocoa again.
I don't know about you, but I love hot chocolate. I know that as an adult I should be drinking coffee or tea by now, but I can't help it. I really enjoy hot cocoa. It's sweet, warm, rich, and it makes me feel *so* relaxed. Typically, I would just pop some hot water into the microwave and stir in a packet of Swiss Miss, which is fine, but when I really want a special treat I whip up this recipe. It's way more decadent than the instant hot cocoa and it only takes about three minutes to prepare and four ingredients to make. So, let's get to it!
8 oz of milk (I prefer skim, but whatever you have is fine)
2 Tbsp of semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tsp granulated white sugar
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
Optional: Marshmallows, whipped cream, sprinkles, peppermint sticks, etc.
Step One - Pour 8 oz of milk into a microwave-safe mug
Pro tip: If you know how many ounces your mug holds you can just eyeball it instead of using a measuring cup.
Step Two - Heat in microwave for approximately 1 min 30 sec
Step Three - Add in the chocolate chips
Step Five - Add in the sugar
Step Six - Add in the vanilla
Step Seven - STIR! Make sure you get all of the chocolate chips thoroughly mixed in. The water will be hot enough that the chocolate will melt in, but you still need to stir well.
Step Eight - Add your favorite toppings and enjoy!
There you have it! Easy, rich, delicious hot chocolate in less than five minutes. This is a personal favorite of mine. Whether I'm reading a book on a rainy day or coming in from a snowy trek home, this is my go-to beverage. Trust me, it's so delicious. You can make it your own by adding in some special extras. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Whipped Cream/ Cool Whip
Extra Chocolate Chips
