"New" Harry Styles/1D Song Leaked

Updated: Sep 3

This morning audio from Harry Styles younger days was leaked! It is a great 1D sounding song titled Half the World Away. It seems like a demo he probably recorded by himself during his One Direction days. However, some people say they can hear harmonies from the other boys in the background.

I think it is very likely that this was recorded at or around the time of Don't Let Me Go. Approximately around the time, One Direction was recording Midnight Memories in 2013. Harry's voice sounds extremely similar in both songs and they are both about losing love. There are rumors that both Don't Let Me Go and Half the World Away are about Harry's most famous ex, Taylor Swift. Don't Let Me Go was leaked seven years ago, but I guess Half the World Away was just leaked today, August 25, 2020. Kind of weird, but whatever- new music is needed during quarantine!

You can listen to the leaked audio on YouTube! Just like Don't Let Me Go, this track will probably never be officially released, but it's at the same time it's also unlikely that it will be taken down by YouTube. After all, everyone's already made recordings of it already.

Update 9/3/20: The original video was taken down by YouTube but you can still listen to the song on other channels, like the one I've embedded below.

Now, of course, there are quite a few lyric videos for this song on YouTube but it seems that the first channel to leak this song was a channel called "Archive". Archive joined YouTube the day that they posted the Half a World Away video, has no other videos on their channel, and no description of themselves in the about section. Very mysterious, if you ask me!

A little over five hours after posting Half a World Away, Archive had already gained over 20K subscribers and Half a World Away had over 127K views. I guess that's one way of going viral on YouTube.

So, who does this "Archive" channel belong to? Well. obviously someone who had access to recordings of Harry Styles from 2013. Maybe a hacker. Maybe someone who works for or worked for Columbia Records. There is also the possibility it could be one of the boys themselves who just wanted to let the world hear this song for the first time in honor of their ten-year anniversary.

According to the description of this video, the song was written by Harry Styles. Even though, he was pretty young in 2013 it wouldn't be surprising because obviously anyone who has listened to Fine Line knows Harry is a gifted lyricist.

Lyrics:

If you were a good friend

you’d always be there when I need it

Cause I’m on my knees again and bleeding

and it kills me that you’re not around

I saw you’re not my girlfriend

Don’t pretend that makes us nothing

Tell me you don’t miss this feeling I

I’m starting to see who you are

Cause there’s a time, there’s a place

And I’m always gonna hear your name

there’s a right, there’s a wrong

And now I see that all along

I messed up, you’ll be fine I’m gonna sleep alone tonight

Never gonna be the same

Cause you’re half the world away

A story you’d heard

And now you rest everything on these three words

now I walk to you till my feet hurt

So tell me that’s not good enough

And I started drinking

I don’t know half of what I’m thinking

And deep in I’m scared I stopped breathing

we started to lose who we are

Cause there’s a time, there’s a place

And I’m always gonna hear your name

there’s a right, there’s a wrong

And now I see that all along

I messed up, you’ll be fine I’m gonna sleep alone tonight

Never gonna be the same

Cause you’re half the world away

I want you around, round, round

Are we going down, down, down

I want you around, round, round

Are we going down, down, down

I want you around, round, round

Are we going down, down, down

Are we going down, down, down

Cause there’s a time, there’s a place

And I’m always gonna hear your name

there’s a right, there’s a wrong

And now I see that all along

I messed up, you’ll be fine I’m gonna sleep alone tonight

Never gonna be the same

Cause you’re half the world away

Cause there’s a time, there’s a place

And I’m always gonna hear your name

there’s a right, there’s a wrong

And now I see that all along

I messed up, you’ll be fine I’m gonna sleep alone tonight

Never gonna be the same

Cause you’re half the world away

So, who is this song about?

I think this song *has* to be about Taylor. It was written in 2013 write around this time of their dramatic boat break-up. Plus, while Harry was in England doing his thing Taylor would have been 'half the world away' in New York. Of course, there is the possibility this song isn't about anyone in particular and was just cranked out by one of One Direction's songwriters. It does sound a lot like the kind of stuff Jamie Scott or Julian Bunetta would write for the band.

What Does This Mean For The Future of 1D

I'd really like to think that this leak means that 1D is going to release some of their unreleased songs either on a special edition album or digitally before too long. Leaks like this have happened in the past with Just Can't Let Her Go and Don't Let Me Go, so there is reason to believe there are a lot of unreleased tracks sitting around on old flash drives somewhere in an A&R studio. I think it would be really cool if One Direction would release some of their old 'lost' songs as this year is their tenth anniversary. Plus, the fandom is alive as ever so it would definitely make them a boat-load of money.
